Southwest Virginia religious leaders speak out against uranium mining

In the ongoing issue of a potential lift of the uranium ban in South Virginia, religious leaders from the area came together to speak out against uranium mining in Pittsylvania County.

The group of ministers and pastors said they wanted to ask the General Assembly to impose a permanent ban on uranium mining.

This monday, a General Assembly study panel voted in favor of lifting Virginia’s 31-year ban on uranium mining – but only in one spot in Southside Virginia. The panel, the Virginia Coal and Energy Commission, endorsed a proposal by Sen. John Watkins, R-Powhatan, to require the state to draft uranium-mining regulations. The issue goes now to the legislature, where both sides predict a close fight.
