Stop the Talvivaara Uranium Mine

PB227094Finland is a land of tens of thousands of lakes and rivers.

The Talvivaara polymetallic and uranium mine in Sotkamo was granted a license to mine nickel in 2006. Talvivaara has since proven itself to be a hazard for water systems on both sides of the watershed.

[To The Talvivaara News Stream]

For years the local people and activists have brought up the fundamental violation of environmental legislation in case of Talvivaara:
the extraction of uranium has been part of the operation of the mine from the very beginning, but uranium wasn’t mention by a single world Talvivaara’s environmental impact Assesment procedure – and there was not a single word about uranium in the environmental permit that was granted. Still Talvivaara has been allowed to extracts hundreds of tonnes of uranium per year from black schist ore – since 2008.

Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) has been surprised about the uranium content in the leaking water. And for years the local people and activists who can do simple math have been afraid of the uranium content in the gypsum waste pond – especially as the environmental impacts of uranium have been neglected.

The hazard we feared, violations and flaws we asked the government and the supervisory authorities not to allow to be carried on has now been carried on to the extreme extent.

We demand that the Finnish government cancel and revoke the environmental permit of Talvivaara mining company.
We demand that the Kainuu Centre of Econonomics, Environment and Transport to close down the mine.
We do encourage shareholders not to support the disaster any further.
And we encourage international reporters to come reveal what is really happening in Finland.
We have demanded this for years, and more than ever we demand immediate action now.
