Makita says ‘Let the beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claim decide about uranium mining, through a free and democratic vote!’ (2011, en)

IQALUIT -- March 17, 2011

Nunavummiut Makitagunarningit (Makita) today called on Nunavut
Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) to hold a vote of beneficiaries of the Nunavut
Land Claims Agreement on whether or not their land claim corporation
should support uranium mining in Nunavut.

“We hope and expect that NTI’s forthcoming review of its Uranium
Policy will be an open and transparent process, with a range of
opportunities for Inuit to offer input,” said Makita Chairperson
Sandra Inutiq. “When the review process is complete and the documents
resulting from the process hve been prepared and released to the
public, there should be a plebiscite for beneficiaries of the Nunavut
Land Claims Agreement on the question of whether or not to allow
uranium mining in Nunavut. Beneficiaries should be given a free and
democratic vote on this important question, and that vote should
settle the question once and for all.”
